Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) is a process improvement approach whose goal is helping organisations improve their performance. It applies to teams, work groups, projects, divisions, and entire organisations.
It originated in software engineering but has expanded over the years to embrace other areas of interest, such as the development of hardware products, the delivery of all kinds of services, and the acquisition of products and services.
CMMI models (or solutions) are collections of best practices that help organisations to dramatically improve effectiveness, efficiency, and quality. These cover a wide range of topics that include:
They provide guidance for developing or improving processes that meet the business goals of an organisation and may also be used as a framework for appraising the process maturity of the organisation.
CMMI corresponds with the EFQM Excellence Model's nine criteria as follows:
| Leadership | |
| Strategy | |
| People |
|
| Partnerships and resources | |
| Processes, products and services | |
| Customer results | |
| People results |
|
| Society results | |
| Key results |
|
|
= addresses many of the Criterion guidance points |
| = addresses some of the Criterion guidance points | |
| = addresses few of the Criterion guidance points |
Using CMMI will help an organisation address the Processes, products and services criterion, but this focus means it is noticeably weaker in assisting with the other eight. Using the Model alongside it can help an organisation address all areas of its operation.
We can support you and your organisation's use of a CMMI approach alongside the Model with a range of products and services:
